Suryakumar Yadav uncaps IPL record

The consistent Mumbai Indians opener added another feather to his cap during his innings against Rajasthan Royals.

Scoring a breezy 38 off 31 balls against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, Suryakumar Yadav became the leading run-scorer for an uncapped Indian player in a single Indian Premier League season.

Yadav, who led Triumph Knights Mumbai North East to victory in the maiden season of T20 Mumbai earlier this year, has now scored 473 runs in 12 matches. He went past Paul Valthaty’s benchmark of 463, which took 14 matches to set in 2011 when he stepped out for Kings XI Punjab.

Valthaty, who also played in T20 Mumbai for Shivaji Park Lions, shone to limelight in the IPL when he struck a whirlwind 120 off 63 balls against Chennai Super Kings in his record year.

The leading run-scorer for Mumbai Indians this season, Yadav’s consistency has allowed him to surpass the record with relative ease despite the pressure of his side facing an ousting in the league stages.

Opening the innings alongside Evin Lewis, Yadav has knit a strong opening partnership for Mumbai Indians and are second only to Kings XI Punjab’s Lokesh Rahul and Chris Gayle.

Mumbai Indians need to win their remaining two matches to keep their playoff hopes alive and with his stellar performances, Yadav has been Mumbai Indians’ go-to man this IPL season.

Incidentally, the top three uncapped players who recorded the most runs in an IPL season have all played for T20 Mumbai. After Yadav and Valthaty, Shreyas Iyer is third in the list with the 439 runs he scored in 2015 for Delhi Daredevils in 14 matches that won him the Emerging Player of the Year in his debut IPL season.

Iyer came into the IPL this season after he emerged as the leading run scorer in the recently concluded T20 Mumbai, where he led NaMo Bandra Blasters to the playoffs.

On Sunday, Ajinkya Rahane led Rajasthan Royals from the front scoring a patient 37 off 36 balls to contribute to the 95-run second wicket stand with Jos Buttler, which is the highest for the second wicket this season for the team.

Rahane, who took the field for North Mumbai Panthers in T20 Mumbai, is currently leading Rajasthan Royals with their latest win keeping them in contention for the playoffs.
