Tushar Deshpande fires to end Mumbai's Ranji season with a win

With a career-best match haul of 9/99, Deshpande wrecked Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy.

Pacers Tushar Deshpande and Shardul Thakur combined to demolish Chhattisgarh at the Wankhede Stadium to set up a comprehensive victory for Mumbai in their final Elite Group A Ranji Trophy match of the season.

The duo picked up 17 wickets of the opposition with Deshpande, who played for ARCS Andheri in T20 Mumbai, picking up nine that included a fifer in the first innings.

Electing to bowl first, Mumbai dismissed Chhattisgarh for a paltry 129 in the first innings with Deshpande registering 5/46, his third five-wicket haul in 12 matches.

Mumbai, however, weren't able to post a substantial score when they came out to bat as they were bowled out for 188 for a lead of 59 runs. Suryakumar Yadav, who led Triumph Knights Mumbai North East to the title in T20 Mumbai, top scored with 43 along with opener Vikrant Auti. Yashasvi Jaiswal -- who has played for North Mumbai Panthers and has starred for India U19s -- marked his First Class debut with 20.

Chhattisgarh, though, failed to capitalise on their bowlers' performance as they couldn't handle the home team's pace again. Thakur and Deshpande scalped eight wickets between them, the latter picking up four of the last five. From 134/5, the visitors were bundled out for 149 setting Mumbai a target of 91 to win. While Thakur recorded 4/47, Deshpande bagged 4/53 that gave him a career-best match haul of 9/99.

Mumbai chased the score with nine wickets to spare, thus recording their only win of the season and avoiding relegation. Deshpande, who returned to the game after injury, was named Man of the Match.
