5 reasons to get pumped up for T20 Mumbai Season 2

On the back of a successful inaugural campaign, the league returns with plenty to look forward to.

Over 13 days, 23 matches will be played at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium between eight teams to lift the T20 Mumbai crown for Season 2. A total of 155 players were selected during the auction earlier this month bringing forward the best the city has to offer. Plenty of action is expected on the field but here are just some of the things to keep an eye on as the season unfolds.

Mumbai's cream of the crop

The T20 Mumbai league offers the city's finest a platform to show what they are capable of. The opportunities are vast. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the top scorer for North Mumbai Panthers last year and went on to successfully represent India U-19s while Dhrumil Matkar of SoBo SuperSonics made his First Class debut for Mumbai later on in the year, picking up fifer and scoring a fifty in just his third match. This is over and above the representation by household names like Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav and Prithvi Shaw who will make successive appearances in the league.

The next IPL pick

After the inaugural season, three players from T20 Mumbai went on to be picked in the Indian Premier League. With the Man of the Tournament tag, Shivaji Park Lions' Shivam Dube went on to take the field for Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier this year while ARCS Andheri's Shubham Ranjane and champions Triumph Knights Mumbai North East' Shashank Singh were picked for Rajasthan Royals.

The first centurion

Last season saw two five wicket hauls registered but it wasn’t able to produce a ton. Sujit Nayak came painfully close as he was stranded on an unbeaten 99 during his blitz against ARCS Andheri. NaMo Bandra Blasters' skipper Shreyas Iyer too came close when he scored an unconquered 91 against Shivaji Park Lions in the Eliminator. And Triumph Knights captain Suryakumar too then led from the front with a measured yet attacking 90* in the final that propelled his team to victory. With three batsmen left unbeaten in the 90s, it won’t be a surprise if one passes the first-ever three-figure mark this time around.

Two new teams

Showing early signs of growth, the league added two new teams in just its second season. With Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs and Eagle Thane Strikers joining the fray, the competition is set to be tighter. Their addition also provides more Mumbai cricketers to showcase their talent. It also provides more representation for the vast city's fans with the regions the two teams embody.

Brand new format

Dropping the round-robin format, two groups of four teams each have been created for Season 2 with a team slated to play five matches each in the league stages. The revamped set-up sees each team play three inter-group matches before going on to play two intra-group matches. The top two from each group will then go on to play in two semifinals, that will eventually lead in to the final on May 26.
