Opener Prithvi Shaw earned his first Man of the Match award in the Indian Premier League this season after he scored a brisk fifty for Delhi Capitals in their 44-run win over three-time champions Chennai Super Kings on Friday.

The batsman from Mumbai was the highest scorer of the match, racking up the only fifty of the CSK vs DC fixture at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. It was also his first half-century of IPL 2020.

“The intent to dominate. The courage to take risks. And the confidence and skills to execute ambitious plans,” noted former cricketer Aakash Chopra. “Prithvi Shaw is a special player.”

Put in to bat first, Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan put on 94 runs for the opening wicket in just 64 balls, laying the foundation for the victory.

The innings started in a flurry with the 20-year-old Shaw hitting successive boundaries off Deepak Chahar in the first over.

“The way the openers started gave us a lot of confidence,” Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer pointed out.

Shaw brought up his fifth IPL fifty in 35 balls and departed in the 13th over for a well-compiled 64 runs in 43 balls, aided by nine boundaries and a six.

“(I hit) a lot of ground shots because it’s a nice outfield,” said Prithvi Shaw, who led North Mumbai Panthers to the title during the second season of T20 Mumbai.

“I was trying to hit boundaries instead of making silly mistakes. It was about getting into a good position in the powerplay and not lose more than one wicket.”

Delhi Capitals scored 175/3 as a result with Chennai Super Kings wrapping up their innings for 131/7.

This was the second fifty in IPL 2020 by a Mumbai batsman after Rohit Sharma’s 54-ball 80 blazed against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday. Prithvi Shaw’s knock, however, wasn’t quite a blitzkrieg but effective nevertheless.

“The innings of Prithvi Shaw showed that you don't always need to be brutal to play a quality T20 innings!” observed Manoj Tiwary, a former IPL batsman. “He was sublimely elegant.”

Delhi Capitals will play Sunrisers Hyderabad next in the IPL 2020 on Tuesday.
