Mumbai’s star batsmen Shreyas Iyer and Prithvi Shaw led the charge in helping Delhi Capitals put up a record total against Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League on Saturday.

DC put up an enviable 228/4 at Sharjah with KKR eventually falling short by 18 runs. With the result, it propelled Delhi Capitals on top of the IPL 2020 points table.

Put in to bat first, DC opened with Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan with the pair putting on 56 runs before the latter fell towards the end of the first powerplay. It brought captain Shreyas Iyer to the crease.

The Mumbai duo put on 73 runs in just 41 balls. Prithvi Shaw, title winning captain in T20 Mumbai, brought up his second fifty of IPL 2020 with a six off Kamlesh Nagarkoti in just 35 balls.

He eventually, however, fell in Nagarkoti’s subsequent over as he holed out to long-on. Prithvi Shaw departed for a 41-ball 66 (4x4, 4x6) scored at a strike rate of 160.97.

Shreyas Iyer, who hit the ground running, was about to pick up his pace. He reached his fifty in just 26 balls, his fastest in the Indian Premier League. The last 13 balls he faced produced 41 runs.

The Delhi Capitals captain, who also leads NaMo Bandra Blasters in T20 Mumbai, remained unbeaten on 88, taking just 38 balls at an astonishing strike rate of 231.57. His blitzkrieg included seven 4s and six 6s.

His partnership with Rishabh Pant was especially devastating for KKR as the two put on 72 runs in just 31 balls.

“It is always a thrill to come and play here,” said Shreyas Iyer, who won the man of the match award. “Winning the match is an icing on the cake.

“I thought today was the right time to take the bowlers on a smaller ground. I took it one six at a time. I won't say I am a gifted player because I know the hard work and smart work I put into it.”
