Herwadkar ton extends Mumbai's streak in Vijay Hazare Trophy

With a responsible knock, the Mumbai opener ensured Goa didn't get back in the game.

Akhil Herwadkar scored a brisk yet composed ton to steer Mumbai to their sixth successive win in the Elite Group A division of the Vijay Hazare Trophy as they beat Goa by seven wickets in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

Set a target of a modest 187, Mumbai found themselves in a bit of a bother at 95/3 when Suryakumar Yadav, last match's centurion, made his exit. But opener Herwadkar, an ARCS Andheri batsman in T20 Mumbai, kept his nerve and saw Mumbai seal the deal after an unconquered 94-run partnership with Siddhesh Lad.

Herwadkar remained unbeaten on 108, playing 112 deliveries and smashing 11 fours and 4 sixes along the way. It was his highest score in domestic One Day format and only his second century in List A cricket in 26 games.

Earlier he forged a 54-run opening-wicket partnership with Jay Bista, who blazed a 25-ball 32 before he fell, with Mumbai losing three wickets for 41 runs in span of just under 10 overs. That kept the game alive until Herwadkar and Lad signed off Mumbai's victory with the Shivaji Park Lions Icon Player scoring a patient 26 not out.

Goa had elected to bat first but that decision didn't do them any good. Dhawal Kulkarni was the pick of the bowlers with 3/32 while the Shivaji Park Lions trio of Royston Dias, Shams Mulani and Shivam Dubey picked up two wickets each.

Mumbai play Maharashtra next on Saturday.
